Jean-Baptiste Bouchardon<\/b> (1667-1742), architecte de la ville de Chaumont, con\u00e7ut en 1716 un vaste projet<\/a> pour un h\u00f4pital g\u00e9n\u00e9ral. Ces plans ne furent pas retenus. Il cr\u00e9a aussi un tr\u00e8s beau retable qui dut prendre place dans la chapelle de l’ancien H\u00f4tel-Dieu. Cependant le nouvel h\u00f4pital fut bel et bien construit de 1750 \u00e0 1765, sur les plans de l’architecte de Langres Claude Forgeot. Le plan retenu est assez sobre : un corps central enrichi de deux ailes en retour, avec, au centre, une chapelle de plan octogonal surmont\u00e9e d’un d\u00f4me. Le retable de Jean-Baptiste Bouchardon<\/a>, l’\u0153uvre d’art principale de la chapelle, y a vraisemblablement \u00e9t\u00e9 transport\u00e9 dans la seconde moiti\u00e9 du XVIIIe si\u00e8cle.<\/span>
Cette page donne quelques photos de la chapelle, dont les murs et les d\u00e9corations sont malmen\u00e9s par l’usure du temps. En 1638, en r\u00e9action aux \u00e9pid\u00e9mies de peste, l’\u00e9v\u00eaque S\u00e9bastien Zamet institue la confr\u00e9rie de la Charit\u00e9, charg\u00e9e de secourir les \u00ab pauvres malades \u00bb. La jeune institution se voit confier la gestion d’un h\u00f4pital am\u00e9nag\u00e9 dans plusieurs maisons regroup\u00e9es d\u00e9j\u00e0 \u00e0 cet endroit.<\/span><\/p>

L’incendie de 1770 permet de concevoir un nouveau b\u00e2timent plus fonctionnel. Etabli suivant les plans de Nicolas Durand, architecte de la g\u00e9n\u00e9ralit\u00e9 de Champagne, le nouvel h\u00f4pital est form\u00e9 de deux pavillons reli\u00e9s \u00e0 une chapelle centrale par deux ailes. Ces derni\u00e8res abritaient les salles r\u00e9serv\u00e9es aux malades. Les pavillons lat\u00e9raux \u00e9taient \u00e9quip\u00e9s d’une salle pour les convalescents, d’une pharmacie et d’une salle d’op\u00e9ration. Le tout allie sym\u00e9trie et monumentalit\u00e9 autour d’une avant-cour formant jardin clos. B\u00e2timent central de la composition, la chapelle en rotonde pr\u00e9sente un d\u00e9cor n\u00e9o-classique de grande qualit\u00e9. oeuvre du sculpteur langrois Antoine Besan\u00e7on, le d\u00e9cor sculpt\u00e9 souligne la vocation des lieux.
